|We can only hope this book is as enjoyable to read, as it was to write and illustrate.
Inspired by a tree in Overland Park, Kansas - along a route once known as ‘The
Santa Fe Trail’ - this book is intended to entertain and inspire young and old alike.
It begins with the narrator describing what all may have transpired during the life of
the tree, while the illustrations are all views looking at the tree.
Midway through the book, when the narrator daydreams that the tree is actually
talking, the illustrations become views from within the tree - as though the tree is
looking out from amongst it’s own branches.
This particular tree is so twisted, gnarly and full of character - with fragments of
ancient fence wire embedded in it’s upper trunk - that it begged to have it’s story told.
So many times, things like trees are merely taken for granted.
Yet, it can be so enjoyable to stop and ponder, how long has that tree been growing?
What was it like, in that spot, when that tree sprouted?
How did it avoid being stepped on, or eaten, or broken by the wind? Is that tree older
than me? (probably)
What all could it tell me - besides what direction the wind is blowing?!
If we’ve been successful, this story will encourage you to think about these things.
And, if we have really succeeded, you may decide to go out and actually plant a tree,
generations to enjoy!
