I Wish,
Oh I Wish,
I Could Chat
With That Fish!
While fishing in a
pond, the narrator
catches a large
catfish - one that
has obviously been
caught a number of
times before.
This makes the
narrator start to
elaborate on what
the fish's life must
have been like, from
the time it was
hatched - and of
course, imagines
that the fish begins
to talk.
If you've ever heard
a fish tale, then you
know they are all
pretty far-fetched.
This fish tale,
however, is pretty
close to the truth!
Not Yet Available
Just then, I started thinking
How wondrous it would be
If this old fish could sit here
And have a chat with me.
Why, he could tell some stories
Of life, here in the pond -
Of how his egg was hatched out
From beneath a water frond.
He'd tell me tales of tadpoles
That sprout legs and head for land.
He’d talk about the clams
That burrow down into the sand.
He’d tell the tales of turtles
With shells so big and strong,
That eat the baby fishes
If they hold still, very long.
He’d talk about the algae
That grows so thick and green,
Providing them with shelter,
Where they can swim unseen.
He’d mention all the tree stumps
And branches, down below,
Where fishing lines are snagged
And snapped, by fishes in the know.
